Late Summer Findings

I'm calling this post Late Summer Findings because I do not have the heart to name Autumn just yet. The trees on the hill behind my house are still green but there is a hint of rust and I wonder - can trees rust too in so much rain? Ah, rain, we have had a lot of rain this summer. So much rain that on dry days, like today, my eyes have to make adjustments as they view the landscape without the water curtain. Some of the potatoes show signs of blight - I hear it's almost unavoidable in a ... read more

British Weather Photographer of the Year

Weather. We talk about it. We moan about it. We live our lives, even in the 21st century, largely at the mercy of it. It never ceases to surprise us, and it can grind our lifestyle to a halt with the merest dusting of snow.

If, like me, you have a camera and an ounce of creativity (and I firmly believe that everyone has at least an ounce), then get yourself outside and take some pictures of British Weather. Why? Well for a start it will give you another excuse to moan about ... read more

Arctic Vixen

Last night the snow was still falling and the blanket of white was almost intact, blurring the boundaries and creating an erie light. This morning the world of humans has taken over and where the road and pavement were one there is clear tarmac and orange stripes of salty sand. The cars, you see, must go on. The gardens tell more interesting tales as the criss-cross of animal tracks bely the journeys of the night. In the dim morning light under clouds laden with more snowfall to come ... read more

Highlands and Islands In a Week part 6

And now returning to the Highlands and Islands trip - I had meant to finish the tale before now!On the Thursday we watched the weather reports with dismay as almost all the Isles were sporting wee clouds with rain or snow symbols. It didn't look good for walking or touring or anything really. But we set off anyway with a vague plan to try and spot some dolphins or seals. We passed Inverness and crossed the Kessock Bridge and took a quick stop of at North Kessock. The tide was going out though, ... read more

Highlands and Islands In a Week part 2

I've cobbled together a map, which I think has a centimetre missing, to give an idea of the routes we took. My road map only shows up A class and B class roads so the struggling-to-be-a -single-track-road roads we took in some places aren't there. But you get the picture :)Sunday's trip was prompted by Dad asking "What do you want to do tomorrow?" and my reply of "Hmmm well I've never really seen much of Sutherland and aren't there some really cool beaches up there?"So we set off around 9:30am ... read more

Snippet From The Journey

I'm home again and catching up with mundane life. I had a wonderful time and have about seven million pictures to sort through - most a bit better quality than the camera phone ones I have been posting throughout the week. We had many moments as beautiful and awe inspiring as the one above, taken in Sutherland - I'll be blogging more about the trip ... read more

Un Settled

I feel the weather and this weekend I am feeling my energies, thoughts and projects swirling. I have a host of ideas that I am working on - some of them are embryonic and I'm wary of voicing them in case they dissipate, others are coming along nicely but still not *there* for any sort of unveiling. Perhaps that's why I'm enjoying knitting socks just now - easy to quantify as a Work In Progress, visible and tangible results and a fairly quick time-span from idea to finished article.I just looked ... read more

Looking For Water? The Sky Is Loaded!

It has stopped raining. It feels like it has been raining since 1937. I'm not complaining though, I've been watching the plight of those poor people in Yorkshire. Can't imagine what that must feel like. This weather is weird though - for the past two days we have had constant rain and thunder storms. Or maybe it's just one storm circling round my head. At one point today, just before the monsoon fell (I am not joking), the air was so full of electricity ... read more
