British Weather Photographer of the Year
Weather. We talk about it. We moan about it. We live our lives, even in the 21st century, largely at the mercy of it. It never ceases to surprise us, and it can grind our lifestyle to a halt with the merest dusting of snow.
If, like me, you have a camera and an ounce of creativity (and I firmly believe that everyone has at least an ounce), then get yourself outside and take some pictures of British Weather. Why? Well for a start it will give you another excuse to moan about ... read more

Burntisland Solstice
The message from the Firth of Forth this morning was of light following dark. Yule, the shortest day, eases into the longest night. The wheel turns. Life moves on. Bright ... read more
Midwinter: Sun and Snow
We took a walk in a snow shower this morning and enjoyed the silence and the light effects as the midwinter sun struggled to break through. Not long now until the days begin to stretch instead of ... read more
Reflections 2009 ~ March
Having bought a house and spent a week flying by the seat of our collective knickers before finally selling the flat, we entered March in a curious state of limbo. We weren't actually moving until April, yet we had kind of left months earlier in our own hearts. We didn't even have the twice weekly cleaning rituals for the no longer happening open viewing sessions to keep us occupied. We took a trip to Fife to give various parental units a drive-by of our soon-to-be new home - this included ... read more
Reflections 2009 ~ February
My recollection of January is that we were visualising movement, but not getting many signals that it was really going to happen. In February things began to gather pace and we began to get glimpses of hope, and then very real actions saw us buying a house before we had actually sold a flat. Instinct and guts in equal measure! The other highlights of February were the wonderful Red Fox Days that played out in the garden, especially the ones played out on a crisp background of ... read more
Reflections 2009 ~ January
I've been looking through my photographs for this year and thinking "Why didn't I post that?... or that?... or that?" Which helped me decide to round the year out with a trip down memory lane... January saw a trip to Edinburgh Zoo - and the first picture I wanted to post is already on that blog, but Mercedes is such a beautiful beast she warrants a second slot... She also reminds me of the word I chose for 2009, movement, as Mercedes also moved away from Edinburgh this year and found ... read more
Morning Jack
I could tell by the light glimmering through my curtains that the fog had receded. When I opened the curtains I was prompted to grab the camera. Having the camera in my hand before I've cleaned my teeth bodes well for the day... We were excited to get out with Logan to see how the world looked, not just to reconnect with the scenery but to assess Jack Frost's decorative skills. We relished the crisp crunch of our footsteps and the knowledge that no-one else had climbed to the high ... read more

Arctic Vixen
Last night the snow was still falling and the blanket of white was almost intact, blurring the boundaries and creating an erie light. This morning the world of humans has taken over and where the road and pavement were one there is clear tarmac and orange stripes of salty sand. The cars, you see, must go on. The gardens tell more interesting tales as the criss-cross of animal tracks bely the journeys of the night. In the dim morning light under clouds laden with more snowfall to come ... read more
Portobello Sunrise
I've been having a week of what I call losing my rhythm, where the healthy and creative routines I've been developing just sort of fell off without warning. I've allowed myself a bit of negative self-talk over this and a bit of blah blah blah about my lack of consistency. Then this morning I was writing my Morning Pages this morning, the first evidence of climbing back on the horsie, and thinking about the cycles I seem to go through and that linear routine is not really my style. Perhaps ... read more
