Women With Altitude

My Mum and Dad have been known to do the odd bit of walking in their time. Their pursuit of height has seen them conquer more than one hundred Munros, as well as many other smaller hills and winding paths. I have joined them on occasion and my own walking resume includes some long paths like the Lairig Gruh, as well as a small puckle of Munros and assorted hillage. There are various reasons why our hill-walking exploits have been curtailed in recent ... read more

23 Reasons Why My Life Is Chaos

If we had known what we know now, the sound-proofing project would have been done in week one and before we bought furniture or unpacked any boxes. Watching new plaster dry is as stimulating and progressive as watching paint dry. Having a whole room devoid of the detritus of home life means all the other rooms are over-flowing. The other rooms were sort of over-flowing anyway. It's unfathomable that all this detritus (I am being polite) could fit into the smaller dwelling we left, ... read more

Sandwood Bay

I have wanted to visit Sandwood Bay for quite a while. In March 2008 we found ourselves at the top of the track in an unexpected and un-planned stop but the lateness of the hour meant we could not undertake the four and a half mile walk to the beach (and the four and a half mile walk back). When I created my Day Zero Project, it was an easy and obvious goal to add to the list - and a quite stunning goal to mark "complete". That said, I want to make the trip ... read more

Garden Meditation

I am sitting on the patio, or is it the terrace ? For the first time since we moved the forces of weather and my own choice to abandon work and home creation pressures have converged to give me an afternoon doing nothing in the sunshine... Ants are busy carrying bits of debris across the flagstones, and a few feet away a goldfinch feeds on thistle seeds from my feeder. The bird appears oblivious to the human watching and writing, and oblivious to the sleeping cat - who Is as oblivious to the ... read more

Dear Sixteen

A letter to my 16 year-old self, inspired by  Sue Bailey and Stephen Fry... Dear Sixteen, I find myself struggling to begin this letter since there are so many moments that will come to you that I might want to better prepare you for, protect you from or remove entirely from your coming future. There are things that have already happened to you that I want to wash from your skin... As one who appreciated The Butterfly Effect, I must consider the implications of urging you to change ... read more
