Doodle Play

Perfect timing - the latest issue of Mslexia plopped through my letterbox today. I'm always intending to submit work every time the new issue appears, but I always manage to put it off...

I was struck by something Maggie O'Farrell said in her interview -

"I have to be disciplined to do the washing or do the tax return or the hoovering... but I don't need discipline to write, not at all."

Clearly I've got things quite the wrong way around because I'm having to discipline myself to write every day (so far it is working) and let go of being a domestic goddess a little. Of course the idea of me being a domestic goddess is somewhat alien really, but in recent months I have become a constant tidier - kind of ironic since almost everything we own is in storage and there's nothing to tidy.

I'm going to stick that quote somewhere prominent to remind me that my creative passions can be freely enjoyed and screw the mundane stuff!

Now that I'm going through a creative boom I'm feeling the pinch of having most of my art and craft materials in storage, but I did keep my Sharpies here and tonight I got down to some Play. A sort of double whammy of inspiration... Leah's theme for January combined with Jen Worden's challenge - creating a self portrait illustrating my 2009 word.

I got quite self conscious doing this one with my wee critic (OK huge critic) going "see you're not an artist, you're not an artist I told you so" as I drew a self-portrait that looks nothing like me. But I had fun.

As is often the case when I actually sit down to play, the first piece is just a key in the door... and if I go with the flow I get something that feels more fluid...
