Spoilers

I was reading this article on the BBC site this morning and Russell T Davies words resonated with me:

"There are some people who like spoilers, and they spoil it for themselves and they like spoiling it for themselves," he said.

"It's when they then promote it on to a bigger scale and they push those spoilers into the tabloids so the general public get to hear.

"I think it's a real shame and I think it undermines all storytelling."

It is a curious thing that humans seem obsessed with being *first* in every area of life and it is quite disappointing to see someone do this - particularly when it is someone else's work, creativity and storytelling they are spoiling.

I try to stay away from hype about films, books or other media that I might be interested in because I like to experience a story with full effect. This is why I find film trailers a bit of a double edged sword, since they are quite often jam-packed with all the best bits and can dilute the eventual experience of the full film.

I'm an aspiring storyteller and the element of surprise is important, I think, in giving people a good experience. I've watched in disappointment on more than one occasion when a person has run amok and *told* my surprises before I've had a chance to deliver them, and stolen the magic from the moment for everyone. It doesn't matter that I can see this person acting out, wanting all the attention... and it doesn't matter that I can see their behaviour is all about them... the end result is that a little bit of magic seeps from the room - and a little bit of magic is something we all need more of in this world.

So if you know a secret or a story surprise, button up your excitement and keep a lid on your knowledge - experiment instead with looking around the room and enjoying everyone else's delight as the surprise manifests.
