Solstice Solace

I took refuge for a few days with my family and return with a bundle of stories and thoughts and a sense of feeling refreshed. My sister has a wonderful new home that is a pleasure to spend time in for a number of reasons, not least bosies and snuzzle time with my perfect nephew. One of the other luxuries of my sister's new home is the garden which is secluded, spacious, diverse and has the added bonus of a woodland estate behind it. You can imagine how I lap it up given my current situation... ... read more

The Long and the short of it

I temporarily suspended my sock knitting adventure to concentrate on finishing the baby papoose. Although I'm a fairly new knitter, I see myself as having a Work In Progress basket always filled with a number of projects... but the baby papoose doesn't have the luxury of lounging amongst half knitted socks and the fantasy of other things I imagine creating with needles - babies grow fast and there are no guarantees this garment could be shuffled to accommodate the "next baby". The reason I ... read more

Mine is bigger than yours

Have you ever noticed that when you tell a story there is always someone in the room who wants to "trump" you? It doesn't matter what the topic might be, the chance of someone feeling the need to *seem bigger* is always there.Phrases like:"...you think that's bad wait til you hear what happened to me...""...that's nothing compared to my story...""...I can beat that story..."I'm talking in the realms of personal stories, life events and whatnot and it bemuses me that people still feel the need ... read more

Happy Father’s Day

I am reminded that it is Father's Day here in Scotland. I have to be reminded of the date because it isn't one that formed an integral part of my calendar as a child. I recall one episode in school where I had to participate with the class in making our fathers a Father's Day Card and this was very odd for me since I had no-one to give it to. When I vocalised this fact to a friend I was treated to the curious stares of rather a lot of the classroom - in the mid 70s divorce was still a taboo you ... read more

Transformation

Beyond the realms of here and nowSomething comes towards usOur thoughts and dreams build hazy shapesAnd bring options into sightBeyond the realms of here and nowOur hazy dream shapes curdleAnd through the veil a path formsAnd our steps bring us closerAmongst the realms of here and thereOur choices change our landscapeAnd step by step what was a dreamBecomes the here and nowInspired by this week's prompt at Writer's ... read more

Rooting Around

I have not been writing much here for a couple of reasons and today I just want to say *whatever* to both those reasons and reclaim my space.I made this SoulCollage card some time ago and I notice that it is the only card I have in my Chakra/Companions Suit. This tells its own story about how disconnected I feel from my body, my energy, my creativity, the earth, how I want my life to be and on infinitum.I was doing some reading about Muladhara, the Root Chakra, today and one thing jumped out at ... read more

Moray Firth Dolphins

Some of you may have followed the tales of my holiday week in the Highlands and Islands in March and our bad timing trying to catch sight of the dolphins. You may have read my recent post, Oily Thorn, which inspires me to imagine protective graffiti across the Kessock Bridge "They are Scotland's dolphins"..(note to everyone the only things I graffiti are sketchbooks, the occasional canvas and, with a little help, my skin)Well I have seen Orcas and Minke in the wild but I have yet to see a Moray ... read more

Change is the Buzzword – but where is the difference?

"You know that old Beach Boys song, Bomb Iran? Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran." ~ John McCain "My goal will be to eliminate this threat." "I will do everything to stop Iran getting a nuclear weapon." ~ Barack Obama (Source: BBC Article - where it also becomes clear he will be another president happy to ship bombs to Israel... will he also use Scottish domestic airports and forget to fill in the paperwork?) I hate to feel apathetic before the expensive race to the White House has ... read more

Worrying Decline at Isle of May Puffin Site

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Decline at biggest UK puffin site Regular readers will know that I am a regular visitor to the Scottish Seabird Centre where I enjoy getting up close with the bird colonies that nest on the Forth Islands via some funky remote control camera links. Sadly the Puffins in the Forth are facing challenges these days that put their longterm presence in the Firth of Forth at risk. Volunteers have spent winters cutting back the non-native Tree Mallow plants that have ... read more

Donald Trump just opens his mouth and lets his belly rumble

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/north_east/7431276.stmJust like George Sorial, Donald Trump cannot resist spouting Doublethink. Today's gem:"I am confident I will be able to demonstrate my passion for this site on which we want to create a world-class development that works in harmony with the natural environment."Half a brain cell is all that's needed to realise that plans to stabilise a mobile sand dune system will mean the sand dune system is no longer mobile. If the SSSI mobile sand ... read more
