The Night I Met a Hollywood Legend
I found the poster! It's actually from "Blighty" magazine.Ink smudging courtesy of Mr Heston himself.
I don't normally do celebrity commentary but this morning I've read the news that Charlton Heston died and I am remembering the evening I spent with him.
It was Aberdeen in the late 80s and I went to His Majesty's Theatre with my Mum to see a touring production of A Man For All Seasons, Charlton Heston was The Star. The performance was excellent but what I remember most is that afterwards we went round the back to the Stage Door and waited for Mr Heston to come out. There were not many people there and when he did come out he was very happy to say hello to us.
I had a poster of him that I had found in one of Mum's "Girl" magazines from the 60s. When I unfolded it and asked him for an autograph he laughed and asked "Where on earth did you get that?" and gave this young, slightly starstruck girl a moment to explain. He signed the poster and he also signed my theatre programme and he gave me a genuine hug.
In later years I became more aware of politics and worldly things, and there were many things that I disagreed with in Charlton Heston's politics and world view. But I will always remember the gentleman I met that evening, the sparkle in his eyes and the warmth in his laughter.

What a great story- have you still got the pic and autograph?
Just for you I found it
Oh… I didn’t have TV or radio on today, so I missed that news. Like you, I could take issue with his politics in recent years especially, but Judah Ben Hur will always have my heart. I’m sad to hear this, and envy you your moment in his company. It’s nice to know he was so kind to you, too.
I’m glad you got to see a warm, human side of him. I think he got to be quite a crank later on.
Crank doesn’t quite cover it. For all that he was a great actor, brandishing and raving about guns to trigger happy Americans is not, in my view, an endearing part of his personality.
However, he was entitled to his view and at least he was proud of something.
Hullo Jaggy and Welcome
I agree with you on the guns thing, and I was very disappointed growing up that I had to assimilate my memory of Charlton Heston with the cranky pro-guns campaigner – and I never quite managed to do that. But I think if a person brings a moment of magic to my life then I will credit them that.. I had a choice with this post… opinion or memory? in the spirit of uniqueness I chose personal memory
