A Fleeting Moment

I stood on this spot in the middle of winter, hands slowly turning to ice and watched the water rolling, breathing, building energy and crashing. Each turn of the water was different linked only by an underlying rhythm. Sometimes I watched the rocky outcrop anticipating a big wave crashing and spraying, my finger poised to take a rapid fire of images, hoping to catch perfection. Sometimes I looked further out to the swell of the Forth and saw shadows play on the surface and the ululating water hinted at secrets, power and great writhing beasts lurking in the depths.
My camera captures a split second in the world and then another, and when I go back another day everything is different - the light, the colour of the water, the face of the imaginary (?) creatures below the surface.
The surface of the water is a boundary between the known and the unknown. I cannot touch the surface, because the weight of my touch penetrates and that part of me is now below the surface. Seconds later, the water I touched in my mind rises and crashes against a rock and separates from all the other water, suspended in the air in my picture, or constantly moving if I put my camera down and just watch and then it rejoins the water and becomes part of something much bigger. Perhaps it caresses a kracken, or a selkie catches it on her tail.
Each moment is like that drop of water, some moments are a part of something much bigger and other moments break free, make a noise and fly through the air before sinking back into the mysterious melting pot. Cherish the moments, but don't spend so much time looking back that you miss this moment here and now.

Thoughts about anger

You succeeded wildly. how appropriate. Good to see you over at the blog this a.m. Been thinking about you.
