Frisky Fox Day

Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) mating

Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) mating

Life has been somewhat less colourful since the foxes raised their cubs and moved on last year. Although I know the foxes remain in the neighbourhood, they just haven't been using the gardens viewed from my window very often. The last few nights, however, have been punctuated with eerie barking and calls and I have been hoping what I was hearing was the sounds of a fox calling for a mate.

Well this morning I was blessed with a half hour show right in the middle of the garden, spoiled and ended only by an ignorant woman who felt it was her personal right to walk out into the gardens and chase the foxes with a camera. Her door slamming, noisy invasion ended the ritual with the foxes running off. Why are humans so disconnected???

Anyway, I got a bit of video which I may upload later, but mostly the foxes were standing tail to tail, apparently joined. The female was occasionally a bit rambunctious and some play fighting ensued, but they seemed to be enjoying their connection. Hopefully this means more fox spotting is imminent, and in around 50 days there will be kits. Life is certainly sexy around these parts!
