NaNoWriMo 2007

It's that time of year again when the excitement is building and thoughts of characters, plots and rattling keyboards run rampant in my mind. I see before me a possibility, a challenge and an excuse to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days.

In previous years I have failed in the sense that I have never managed 50,000 words, although I've usually written more words than I wrote the previous month - so the word failure is perhaps too harsh. This year I rise to the challenge yet again with my only goal to write something every day. There are all sorts of motivational tactics running through my brain - just aim to beat last year's word count... nah aim to write the full 50,000 words... nah that's too daunting and *big* so just aim to write 1667 words per day...

I do this little mental dance because I still haven't found the perfect motivational equation for my creative aspirations. I seem to yo-yo between billowing productivity and abject inertia. Obviously I'm getting into the NaNoWriMo spirit though because one good trick is to use three words where one will do!

I have just been to my NaNoWriMo Profile and thought about giving my novel-to-be a title. The empty text box glared back at me as several phrases rose and fell. The suggested genres box was an even more negative experience - I'm not a fan of pigeon holes and boxes anyway, but to constrict an unborn novel into a genre from the outset just doesn't seem very appealing.

So we (currently me, my keyboard, one male character and Potential) careen towards the First of November unfettered by titles, definitions, or boxes. Already I feel like I ate a dictionary for breakfast as I enjoy the words dripping from my digits. The freedom to spend November writing excessively flowery self-indulgent language, a month where adverbs are my best friend and editing is just not allowed - I can't wait!

You make me SO happy that isn’t just me. And I’d really like NaNo moved to a month when my SAD hasn’t kicked in.
