Donald Trump – Environmental Destruction – Trumpton and Aberdeenshire
Nope. He hasn't run away with his tail between his legs yet. He even promised to if we said we didn't want him. We even wrote to his friend neil@trumpgolfscotland.com and told him - which was funny because if you were an American you got a lovely paragraph from said Neil explaining how positive the people of Scotland were towards the idea. If you were, like me, actually from Scotland you got a curt one liner telling you your comments had been noted (translation - ignored and deleted).
So if you have read my blog, or been paying attention to the world of assaults on the environment, you will already know the following. Even so, please read on - everyone, Scottish or otherwise, has the right to a voice in this matter and I'd like you to join me in protecting our environment and the species that do not have a voice.
What Trump wants to do:Build Trump Golf Resort & Housing Development at Menie Estate, Balmedie, Aberdeenshire. Essentially the development of a New Town (Trumpton) on Undeveloped Coast & an Area of Landscape Significance :
2 golf courses on a SSSI (we have 70 courses in Grampian already)
8 - 12 storey tower block 450 bedroom hotel
400 unit staff accommodation tower block (not jobs for locals - minimum wage service jobs)
36 luxury golf villas
950 luxury holiday apartments in tower blocks
500 exclusive £700,000 houses
The reality is that this is not going to benefit the local economy in the ways that Trump and his marketing cronies suggest - the jobs would be mainly minimum wage - more people enslaved to big corporations really isn't the way to an empowered population or economy.
If you live around or know Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, you will know that traffic is already a major issue - consider the above numbers and think about all those extra vehicles and attendant pollution adding to the beauty and tranquility of the area. It isn't only the cars - a previous entry on the Trump website spoke about the airport as if it already has that extra runway flying big poisonous jumbos in from all over the world.
Are you getting the picture? He is planning an act of disneyfication on an unspoilt area to ship people in to swipe their credit cards to filter said profits back into his coffers. He will be exploiting Scotland, not enhancing it. If he really wanted to support Scottish golf he might spend his dollars visiting any of the 278 golf courses, (small businesses?) already in existence in Scotland.
His bully tactics are becoming more noticeable, although I think I pointed this out earlier when I wrote about how he made demands that plans for an offshore wind farm should be scrapped because they spoiled his view.... Now he is reported to be stopping access to his land, stopping a man from fishing in the sea (Trump now thinks he owns the North Sea!) and suggesting a wish to remove a local farmer and his home because it is "disgusting" ~ Trump and his ego believe that people are merely beings who can be bought by offering them money and a job.
He is not the sort of person worthy of doing business with Scotland, I like to think we have higher standards, never mind a healthy respect for our wild and ancient heritage.
Here is what you can do:
If you care about the environment, sustainable development, and trying to reduce the effects of global warming, please make your views known to the council and sign the petitions before it is too late.

Your voice counts, wherever you are on the planet.

I don’t know what the answer is to this kind of thing. We fight it here in Austin,TX all the time. Developers come in with their money and there seems to be very little that people with the enviroment in mind can do to stop them. I waited for years to be able to live here and now I am thinking seriously about leaving because of it. The thing is,once land is built on, it can never go back to its natural state so even if the money stops flowing, the damage is done.
I know that you posted this article a long time ago, but if you are still interested in the campaign, there is a re-energized group and movement Tripping Up Trump. Please get in touch at trippinguptrump@google.com. We’ve a fast growing support and have a lot of actions campaigned to kick out Trump.
Cheers.
