Give Us Democracy

Well the political landscape of Scotland is either very interesting or very depressing, depending on how much of an idealistic optimist one is...

I'm hearing about challenges to the vote count and calls for recounts and my own thoughts are that the election was a shambles - there are still people who did not even get to vote because their postal ballot papers never got to them in time. Shocking. I'm leaning towards the opinion that another election should be called just so that the people can actually vote properly, never mind to sort out the problems that the current official results present.

The Liberal Democrats announced there would be no coalition with Labour, and later announced there would be no coalition with the SNP - this leaves the SNP in a minority parliament as I understand it. The Liberal Democrats single sticking point in refusing to form a coalition with the SNP is their stance that they do not want a referendum on Independence.

In the name of democracy who exactly do they think they are? Forgive me, but isn't a referendum simply a mechanism whereby citizens can voice their opinion on a single issue? Isn't one of the basic tenets of democracy that the people's voices be represented?

So then how can ANY party stand in the way of a referendum on an issue?

Whatever your opinion on Scottish Independence, it is a large enough issue that the only logical way to address it is to put it to the public vote and get an actual definitive answer. That is an actual definitive answer as spoken by citizens, not some skewed poll from a tabloid, or a political party with an agenda.

So, dear politicians - get over yourselves and your unhealthy obsessions with power and get your collective fingers out and just for once SERVE THE PEOPLE. Then you can concentrate on doing what you are meant to be doing - more serving the people I'm afraid - and work towards a progressive political landscape in Scotland that will be a shining example to the world, independence or not.

Please, please don't get bogged down in your egotistical power games that stop any policy going through Just Because and wasting OUR MONEY whilst you stall.

One Response to “Give Us Democracy”

ah, politics, the ever necessary evil. If you don’t vote, you can’t complain.
I agree with your every word – I’m very much in favor of true democracy (not republics like here in the US where we elect someone to speak for us – who hardly, these days, ever speaks for ME). We must trust that keeping on will do it. I won’t even get into the first “election” of “W”. And look what a mess that mess got us into!
