Hermit Crab ~ Coming Out Of My Shell

Coming out of my shell

Random conversations can lead you to the most interesting places...

Yesterday a friend posted on a forum asking about Rumpelstiltskin - she had come across a little figurine that looked like him and wanted some advice. It sent me off on a lovely tangent recalling the story and in the end she concluded that the little figure must be Rumpelstiltskin.

Anyway, as I was musing about the story I recalled a long ago conversation about the Scottish Storytelling Centre and admonished myself for never having paid them a visit... then the words "Artist Date" began blinking in neon pink and I looked up the website. Before I knew what was happening I had somehow decided that this workshop was going to fill my Saturday.

When I wrote my Morning Pages this morning I had a wonderful little argument with my critic about going - fear of having to stand up and talk in front of people (a perennial favourite), concerns about what to wear (I kid you not I have no ambitions of being a fashionista - so this is just pure sabotage!) and even a wee lecture about how I would probably be late so just shouldn't bother going (!)...

But the truth is I love stories, I love entertaining people and I have a great sense of drama - but I have no outlet for any of that and exploring the storytelling traditions has been a secret wish of mine for quite a while. So I phoned the centre just now to make enquiries and it turns out you have to pre-book. Before I knew it the lovely woman had charged my credit card and added me to the list of attendees.

Now I have fear fluttering in my belly - but it's a good feeling!

Did I ever mention that my master’s is in Story and Social Change? =]
    Story is so powerful!
It’s based on a creation poem called Night Vision. 28 verses. I about died when I came home from the on-campus quarter after saying: I’m going to base my thesis on an original creation poem. All the way home I was thinking: what if nothing comes? what if nothing comes!!!! WHAT IF NOTHING COMES???!!!!!
I wrote the whole thesis, not just the poem. in 10 days (100 pages and had to quit because it was getting too long). And that includes the first 10 pages that got zapped and disappeared by a freak electrical storm (that took 1/2 bottle of wine to get over).

Trust me. If you love story, you have story to tell.

And I can’t wait to hear about it!
