A Bit of This and That

I am motivationally challenged. I am not motivationally challenged. I am motivated... Well according to The Secret I need to be telling myself the latter because either of the first two simply create those realities... It's a concept I agree with even if I don't implement it every single moment.

I first saw the film last September and I was left sitting on the fence. I mean the concept itself is wonderful and great, but I was left with this lingering unease and disappointment that the film-makers focused on Being Rich, or Having The Biggest House in America, or Increasing Your Collection of Material Stuff. There was a distinct lack of social responsibility or attention paid to things like carbon footprints and sustainability. Yes, they did utter words like Peace but the advice seemed to be ignore the news, avoid being aware of the atrocities committed in your name and envisage blue skies and fluffy bunny rabbits.

Perhaps I am just an unhealthy thinker who doesn't get it - but it seems a little dangerous to encourage people, particularly Americans, to stop paying attention to what is really going on in the world, to not even seek the truth and to create a bubble of happy unreality as elections loom in both Washington, Westminster and not forgetting Holyrood.

Well, I wasn't intending to write about any of that but there you go... The news story that touched my heart today is that of a young woman who is lodging a legal battle for the right to die. I watched the interview and I just felt compassion for her. I could not set myself up to judge whether her request is right or wrong and I find myself thinking that her dignity should be governed by her own laws, not some suits in the courts or Westminster.

I am humbled by her self contained grace in the face of two unfair choices and the only way I can really honour her story is to live today as fully as I possibly can.
