The Vagina Monologues

Yesterday I read about a woman in Florida who complained about the name of the play at her local theatre - The Vagina Monologues. As a result of her complaint, the theatre changed the name to "The Hoohaa Monologues". The woman was offended when her niece asked her what a vagina was.

I am still incredulous about this - that the women who are performing, producing and directing this play are going along with this and continuing to perform. Do they not see their own subservience to the patriarchal and misogynistic values behind this? Are they really intent on honouring the gorgeous truths about women and their stories inherent in the play? Or are they just lip-synching for fifteen minutes of fame?

How can it be that a woman is offended by the correct name for a part of her anatomy? Who taught her to feel this way? Why is it OK for her to teach her niece to feel this way? And this amazing feat of self enslavement is brought to us from the land of the free.

All Ms. Backwards had to do was answer that innocent question with the simple answer. No big deal – and yet, STILL, we are supposed to hide and be ashamed…have you seen the latest Dove commercial (they will only show you the actual pictures online…I don’t have the url but I’m going to go look it up because I saw an actual ad I think in O (Oprah).
