Contradictions
I am increasingly disturbed by comments from UK politicians praising the decision to execute Saddam Hussein. Since capital punishment is illegal in the UK, I find it contradictory for people like Margaret Beckett to speak in a way that seems to cross the line into supporting state murder.
Hussein was executed in the middle of the night. I am not surprised to read the news - but I am disgusted at this action. In no way do I support Saddam or the legacy of his political life - but I do not think that murdering a man is a great example to set anyone. George W Bush and Tony Blair bang on about wanting peace - but the real actions that come from them are all about killing. You cannot claim to be seeking a peaceful world when you are creating a river of blood.
Is Iraq really governing itself? Is it really a country that has no influence from Washington? Was this trial and subsequent execution really free from outside influence?
And other equally disturbing news this morning - John Scarlett of MI6 is to be knighted in the New Years Honours. This is the man who was in charge of creating the report about WMD for Westminster which led to Tony Blair engaging in this illegal war in Iraq. Why are they honouring this man?

I Always Cry...
Right on, sister…Everyone always forgets it was the U.S. (Bush I?) who set Hussein up in the first place, back when Iran was the devil. Hussein was awful, but he didn’t get there on his own – he had way too much help from the U.S.
